For the first intellectual Output of our Project Divercity – Diving into diversity in the museums and the city, we collected good practices on art and inclusion in museums and public space art activities. The aim of this study was to gain an overview on existing practices and examples of museum and art pedagogy that deal with diversity both inside and outside of museums. It was important to us to see this collection of good practices as a spring of inspiration for the tasks that lie ahead of us. In the collection process, the following criteria were applied:
· Diversity as main topic of the project.
· Themes: gender, age, cultural diversity, locality.
· Target Group: Youth in deprived areas.
· Inclusion of target group in the process.
· Institution extends its space by the public space.
· Inspiring forms of (art) education / museum pedagogy.
· Building bridges between disadvantaged / silenced groups and the majority society.
· Sustainability (on both, personal and institutional level: either institutionalization and follow-up projects or deep personal impact and intensity).
· Valorization of city outskirts.
At the end of this work load, we ended up having a compilation of 21 good practice examples that are described according to the template and that are completed by a collection of additional practices with short summaries and links. All together the output of our good practice research comprises 100 different examples.
Due to the broad range of focusses in both, our partner organizations (from gender issues to age and cultural diversity) as well as the set of indicators, the selection of good practices covers a great variety. We embrace this plurality as it shows that there are many possibilities of how to address subjects of diversity in museums and art pedagogy. We want this collection of good practices to inspire not only ourselves but institutions that work with this subject or plan on implementing such strategies as well. Therefore the dissemination of this research will be through our homepage as well as through other media, such as magazines, in all respective countries.
We find that the first intellectual Output both helped us to discuss inside of our team of partners more deeply on our common aims, as well as it allowed us to provide a collection of good practices on art mediation and museum pedagogy that deals with the topic of diversity inside and outside of institutions and with people in deprived areas. This collection that we hereby present is meant for all persons interested in such methods and techniques.
We consider that personal interrogations, which were also part of this first research task, are of great importance if one wants to get real insights into the course of a project. We see this as a link between IO1, the collection of good practices and IO2, foundation bricks that is supposed to deepen the knowledge that we have gained through this first research.
